CINCINNATI -- Police arrested a man in the shooting death of an 18-year-old woman Sunday afternoon in South Fairmount.

Jahmaria Cruz was shot on Ley Avenue near Mandery, Lt. Steve Saunders said. Police were called to the scene at about 1:32 p.m. Sunday. Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police arrested Anthony Chase, 22, later that day. He was charged with murder in Cruz's death and given a $1 million bond.

Investigators went door-to-door as many people in the neighborhood were honoring their mothers.

"It's shocking because it happened on Mother's Day," South Fairmount resident Peter Mattress said. "So, to think about the mother of that child -- that's kind of shocking -- and then to think about how close it is to kids; there's a lot of kids in that corner house down there."

Community outreach advocates also came out to help keep the peace as news of the shooting spread.

"It's a shame that something like this could happen on Mother's Day, and we have to feel for the family," Pastor Peterson Mingo said. "Feel for the mother, and offer our prayers.

The investigation is ongoing.
