For more than a year, we have been studying trust in media along with the Reynolds Journalism Institute.

One of the things we have learned is people want to see more of themselves reflected in the media. People also want someone to listen to them.

Being responsive and listening to feedback from community members has always been a part of the DNA of newsrooms I have worked in. I’m glad that it is a part of how we operate at WCPO.

But we have also recognized that there is more that we can do to listen as well as foster and encourage discussion in our community.

9 On Your Side news director, Chip Mahaney, and our managing editor of opinion and engagement, Dave Holthaus, have each worked to create new features that aim to bring people’s views to the forefront.

Feedback Friday launched earlier this year. That feature allows people to call a hotline number or send in a video expressing opinions on the stories we cover or how we cover them. Each Friday at 6 p.m., anchor Craig McKee shares some of those opinions.

Our newest way to share your thoughts is called What You Said. Each week, we will identify an important news topic that has multiple sides. Then we will ask you for your thoughts on the topic.

We will collect thoughts on social media, via email or an online submission. The format can be anything we can put online. That could mean text, video, audio, drawings or anything else you can come up with. The important thing is we want to be a host for the exchange of thoughtful ideas.

The first edition of What You Said is focused on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. We received a variety of different perspectives.

These latest two features are just the newest ways you can share your thoughts with us and the community as a whole.

We also publish community opinion columns about newsy topics. To propose a column, email Dave at david.holthaus@wcpo.com.

You also connect with our online community on our Facebook and Twitter accounts.

You can connect with individual journalists to provide your feedback on social media as well. For example, you can always reach myself or Chip Mahaney on Twitter.

Here are our Twitter handles:

@ChipMahaney

Finally, as always you can email me with any feedback or comments.

Your voice is important. We hope these new channels offer even more opportunities to create dialogue in our community.
