COVINGTON, Ky. -- Covington police say vandals destroyed benches in the urban zen rock garden park near the intersection of Pike and Russell streets.

The damage happened Friday, police said. Some of the concrete benches were smashed in half.

"I would presume that something like that happened from someone totally out of our city," said Judi Gerding, who has wored in Covington since 1982. "I have always felt safe. Covington's a great place."

This is the second case of vandalism in Covington in the past six months, police said. In July, trees were chopped down on the city's west side.

"These people are devastated," said Holly Young from the Westside Action Coalition Neighborhood Association. "This was a lot of effort we've put into our community to make it a better place and one person's actions have caused an uproar."

Police said they're unsure if the two incidents of vandalism are related.
