Dr. Atiq Durrani schedules Tuesday news conference to address Medicare fraud charges, lawsuits

CINCINNATI - Spine surgeon Dr. Atiq Durrani will address charges of alleged health care fraud during a Tuesday news conference, according to his criminal attorney, Bruce Whitman.

The conference will be held at noon Tuesday at the Westin hotel.

Dr. Durrani was released on his own recognizance Thursday after being arrested on accusations of Medicare fraud and performing unnecessary surgeries.

Whitman said he and the doctor have gone over the criminal complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney's Office and will respond to the allegations of Medicare fraud and performing unnecessary surgeries.

Patients supporting Dr. Durrani are also expected to speak.

The charges were outlined in a complaint by the U.S. Attorney's Office filed in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati.  Dr. Durrani's next court appearance is Aug. 19.

A total of 150 civil lawsuits have also been filed against Dr. Durrani by attorney Eric Deters on behalf of former patients who claim spine surgeries were performed that weren't needed and that their conditions in many cases are worse than before the operations.

Both Whitman and Dr. Durrani's civil attorney, Michael Lyon, have denied all claims, saying their medical experts have concluded that the surgeries in question were appropriate and professionally done.
