1 dead in crash on I-71/75 in Walton

WALTON, Ky. - One person was killed and another was flown to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after a crash on I-71/75 in Walton, Ky. Thursday afternoon.

A 1999 Nissan Altima carrying two people overturned in the northbound lanes near the I-71/75 split in Walton around 3 p.m., according to the Boone County Sheriff's Office.

Witnesses from the scene told the sheriff's office that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, veered to the left and then quickly back to the right, causing it to slide sideways off the right side of the road, through the grass and strike a culvert, which caused it to go airborne. When the vehicle landed, it rolled one and a half times, ejecting both occupants and landing on its top.

Connie Sutherland, 31, of Saylersville, Ky., was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim, Jonathan Keeton, 29, also of Saylersville, was flown to University Hospital by a medical helicopter with life-threatening injuries. Sheriff's say neither occupant was wearing a seat belt.

Accident reconstructionists with the Boone County Sheriff's Office have yet to determine who was driving.

All lanes have reopened and traffic is moving normally now, but both directions of the interstate were shut down for about one hour.

No other information has been released at this time.
