On May 22, Acella Pharmaceuticals recalled numerous lots of NP Thyroid® after testing revealed they were super potent. NP Thyroid® is a prescription drug that is used to treat hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland fails to produce enough hormones. NP Thyroid® is intended to replace or supplement the hormone that is usually made by the thyroid. Unfortunately, the recalled lots of NP Thyroid® are super potent and contain up to 115% of one of the drug’s active ingredients.
Patients who ingest super potent doses of NP Thyroid® can suffer serious injuries. According to the recall notice that was posted on the FDA’s website, those who are exposed to super potent NP Thyroid® may experience symptoms such as:
- chest pain
- rapid heart rate
- heart rhythm disturbances- weight loss
- heat intolerance
- fatigue
- muscle weakness
- hypertension
Additionally, super potent NP Thyroid® may cause miscarriage or impaired fetal development when taken by pregnant women.
As of May 22, Acella Pharmaceuticals had received at least two reports of injuries associated with super potent NP Thyroid®. Burg Simpson has received additional reports of injuries linked to this super potent drug.
