Registered dietician weighs in on foods to eat when trying to lose weight

CLEVELAND - Typically, when you start a diet, you run down a list of things you'll need to eliminate, but there are certain foods you should never ditch when you diet.

Amy Jamieson-Petonic is a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic. She says to keep peanut butter in your plan.

"People think that peanut butter is too high in fat, too high in calories, it's not going to help me. Peanut butter is actually a great source of vitamins and minerals, as well as those mono-unsaturated fats that really tend to help us feel fuller longer," said Jamieson-Petonic.

Jamieson-Petonic recommends eating natural peanut butter with no trans fats and to keep it to one or two tablespoons per day.

About a cup of 100 percent whole grain pasta per day should help stabilize your blood sugar levels and provide B vitamins.

She says a baked potato will also help you feel fuller, longer, but she says don't top it with the butter and cheese, instead try some Greek yogurt.

Jamieson-Petonic says you should never chuck cheese from your diet.

"The important piece to remember about cheese is the amount and we're talking about 1 ounce. What cheese is going to give us, is vitamins, minerals, protein, and calcium- that's going to give us what we need. And notoriously women tend to be low in calcium," said Jamieson-Petonic.

Jamieson-Petonic says a piece of mozzarella string cheese or one square of American cheese per day is all you need.
