Mother killed after being dragged and hit by a car in Middletown

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio - Three Middletown children lost their mother Monday morning after she was dragged and hit by a car following an argument over money.

Middletown police say Kristina Purdin, 27, died around 9 a.m. at Miami Valley Hospital.

Investigators received a call around 9 p.m. Sunday about two groups arguing at the corner of Moore Street and Wayne Avenue. When officers arrived, they found Purdin laying in the middle of the road, unresponsive and bleeding.

After an initial investigation, Middletown Deputy Police Chief Maj. Mark Hoffman said Purdin and another individual allegedly got into an argument with Dustin Watkins, 23, and Maria Misquez, 31, who were inside a car. Police believe the argument had something to do with money. Witnesses say when Purdin reached inside the vehicle, the driver allegedly sped off and dragged her down Moore Street, eventually running her over.

"Her arm got stuck in the seatbelt and they dragged her down the road and when they finally stopped, and she got her arm out, she fell. The guy had turned the tire, took off again, he took off and ran over her head," said Zena Witt, Purdin's mother-in-law.  "By the time my son got down there to her, he was hollering and screaming and hugging her, trying to get her to wake up, she never woke up."

Investigators arrested Watkins and Misquez less than 24 hours from the time of the accident.

"We talked to some witnesses on the scene. She was there with somebody else, they gave us some information, we had a lot of leads that we could follow up," said Chief Hoffman.

Police charged Watkins with felony fleeing and tampering with evidence and Misquez with complicity to fleeing. They are both being held in the Middletown Jail. Police have not said whether the two will face additional charges.

Purdin leaves behind a husband and three children, ages 9, 8 and 5.

"She's a good mom, she's a good person. My son loved her, she was the love of his life and all he keeps telling me is he wants her to come home, wants me to go get her and bring her home like how? I can't, if I could, I would," said Witt.

The incident remains under investigation.
