Newport Central Catholic advanced to the All ‘A’ state tournament for the first time since 2011 with wins over Lloyd and St. Henry.

NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 10, LLOYD 0 – Thoroughbreds freshman right-hander Haley Meyers threw a one-hitter in the semifinal game, allowing just a second-inning single in the semifinal.

Juniors second baseman Casey Kohls and catcher Kristen Schreiber knocked in three runs each for NewCath. Kohl tripled in three in the five-run second inning, and Schreiber plated one with a double in the first, grounded in another in the second and belted an RBI single in the fourth.

Senior center fielder Laura Finke slid to catch a line drive in the fifth inning, and senior first baseman Maria Schaefer snagged line drives in the first and sixth frames to hold the Mustangs without a baserunner.

Freshman catcher Kennedy Baugh was behind the plate for all seven innings, and she made a diving catch on a foul ball in the fourth inning to record an out.

Notre Dame junior shortstop Haylee Smith lifted a sacrifice fly in the first inning, and she belted an RBI base hit during the Pandas’ four-run, six-hit third inning.
