CINCINNATI -- It's official. University of Cincinnati's forward Jermaine Lawrence won't wear his Bearcats jersey next year.
The sophomore is transferring from Cincinnati to be closer to his family, coach Mick Cronin announced Tuesday. Lawrence said in a statement on Tuesday that his father is ill and he wants to go to a school closer to home, the Associated Press reported. Lawrence grew up in Springfield Gardens, New York and attended Pope John XXIII High School in New Jersey.
“I want to be closer to him as well as be close enough where I can have him and my mom attend my games. We appreciate everyone’s support," Lawrence told 700 WLW NewsRadio .
Cronin said Lawrence will leave on good terms with the team and coaching staff. “We have been praying for Jermaine's father and understand the situation,” Cronin said. “We wish Jermaine all the best.”
The departure comes four days after Lawrence requested the transfer .
The highly-sought five-star recruit played 15 minutes a game but averaged just 2.8 points and 2.9 rebounds.
The AP said he had a season-high nine points against Kennesaw State on Nov. 29. Lawrence missed eight games from Jan. 7 to Feb. 2 because of an injured toe.
