Second baseman Skip Schumaker has signed a 2-year deal with the Cincinnati Reds pending a physical, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

Schumaker was with the Los Angeles Dodgers last year, and began his career with the Walt Jocketty-led St. Louis Cardinals, where he played with mixed success in the first eight years of his MLB tenure.

Schumaker played in 125 games for the Dodgers last year, batting .263, with two home runs and 30 RBIs.

Schumaker, 33, is not a full-time starter at second baseman at this point in his career, and especially not one to replace Brandon Phillips if indeed a trade does come through for the Reds All-Star . The former Cardinals second baseman did post two great back-to-back years in 2007 and 2008, when he hit . 302 and .303 in 153 games both seasons, but the veteran has been on the decline since then.

Defensively, Schumaker has spent enough time in the outfield to know what he's doing (a total of 64 games last year for LA), but the Reds already have a loaded roster beyond the diamond and wouldn't likely need him there except in late game situations when they've already used up some of their options. At 2B, Schumaker has a career .979 fielding percentage, and while he won't make some of the spectacular plays Phillips does, he's got decent enough range to save his share of hits.

The Reds have not yet officially announced Schumaker's signing.
