JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) -- The first concrete beams have been lowered into place for a new Ohio River bridge that will link downtown Louisville, Ky., with Jeffersonville, Ind.
Walsh Construction project manager Max Rowland says each of the five concrete beams weighs 67 tons. The 118-foot-long beams were set into place Monday to form the foundation for the bridge's new Interstate 65 exit in Jeffersonville.
A total of 870 such beams will be put into place over the next three years.
Rowland tells the News and Tribune that the project is still on schedule with an anticipated 2016 completion date.
The bridge project's next phase will be the placement of metal deck forms that span each of the beams and will support concrete that will be poured sometime next spring
