Chunk of concrete falliing from bridge caused longed traffic delay, minor injury

A piece of bridge fell onto westbound I-74 in Dearborn County, causing a single semi-truck crash that tied up traffic for hours.

Mark A. Troyer, 58, of Middlebury, Indiana was hauling a load of roof shingles just before 1 p.m. when a 2-cubic-feet chunk of concrete fell from the State Route 46 bridge overpass onto the lane in front of him. State road crews are currently performing major repairs to the bridge.

Troyer could not avoid the chunk of bridge. After his semi hit it, the vehicle hit the highway median and overturned. The semi driver experienced minor injuries to his leg in the crash.

“Thanks in large part to seat belt use, Mr. Troyer only suffered a minor injury,” Indiana State Police Trooper Randel Miller said.

The incident closed both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-74 for more than two hours. State troopers believe heavy machinery used in the bridge repair dislodged the piece of concrete.
