FALMOUTH, Ky. – The young mother and volunteer coach who admitted having sexual contact with a 13-year-old boy pleaded to avoid a jail sentence that would take her away from her year-old child.
But the judge did not budge and sent Cassandra Elfers to jail for one year Wednesday – punishment she accepted in a plea deal.
Elfers wiped away tears as she left the courtroom with her attorney, Eric Deters, who tried to console her.
“One of the things judges like to do is that they like to show the seriousness of the offense by making them go to jail for a time period,” Deters said.
Elfers was a volunteer assistant coach for the victim’s team.
Evidence included text messages and an exchange of photographs. According to Deters, she sent one text that said: “I wish you were older.”
But Deters said the sexual contact did not involve intercourse or oral sex.
“That’s still wrong, but it’s not as bad as sexual intercourse. There is degrees of culpability here,” Deters said.
As part of her plea deal, Elfers will not have to register as a sex offender.
