"Man is the only animal that blushes, or needs to.”
Mark Twain's 1897 take on varlets is as timely as today's headlines with the American people being treated to another profile in cowardice. Scoundrels all, top to bottom, kicking the can down the road yet again, with little or no compunction for the terror they inflicted on senior citizens, unable to fathom people whose word is not their bond. Not to mention the insulting indifference displayed toward Gold Star families, hung out to dry when death benefits for their recently slain warriors got stuck in the gummy works of government.
What an outrage. And to think these people slither among us under the label, "leaders".
As for the furloughed government workers, whose situation engendered so much hand wringing and countless croc tears? Well their next check will make them whole. I suspect some of the more conscionable will devote a few of their off hours to job-related activities, so as to defray the man/woman hours lost to their inadvertent vacation. Sadly they will be in the minority. Congress itself should devote its next payday to Wounded Warriors or something resembling nobility. They've earned nothing but more enmity.
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, the statesmen have fled the building. Only politicians and party hacks remain. A pox on both their houses.
Not to say redemption isn't possible. They will have a chance to take a stand when we once more revisit this seamy business just after the 1st of the new year.
But don't get your hopes up. Just repair the dings in the can so it can be more easily propelled to another day.
