CINCINNATI -- The next time you're about to buy a pair of high heels, you might want to hold off for something a little comfier.
A 3D scan released this week by the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) shows the unnatural shape a foot takes in a high-heeled shoe, causing pain and long-term damage.
For the first time in the United Kingdom, specialists at the North London, England, hospital are using this new technology to view a foot or ankle in 3D.
The scanner is called the PedCAT, and experts say it will transform the treatment of foot and ankle problems often caused by wearing high heels, according to a release from the RNOH.
In an animation video posted on YouTube, RNOH consultant orthopaedic surgeon Andy Goldberg explained how the 3D scanner is enabling new insights into foot and ankle conditions.
“The new scanner allows us to clearly see how the foot and ankle looks and functions inside shoes fully weight bearing,” Goldberg said in a news release.
While there is an established link between high heels and foot pain, experts say this is the first time the effect of shoes on feet can be seen in real time.
Does this new technology make you want to trade in those Manolo Blahniks?
