The Norwood native and U.S. Army Staff Sergeant accused of shooting down 16 innocent Afghans while deployed will be arraigned in a military court in Washington State on Thursday.
Prosecutors say Sgt. Robert Bales left his remote base in southern Afghanistan early on March 11, attacked one village, returned to the base and then slipped away again to attack another nearby compound. Sixteen people were killed, nine of which were children.
The Army is pushing for the death penalty.
At the arraignment at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, charges will be read to Bales that include 16 counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder.
It was not clear whether Bales' lawyers would enter a plea at his arraignment.
If he is found guilty, Bales could be sentenced to death.
