TUCSON, Ariz. - A 22-year-old man was shot by a 68-year-old man Saturday morning after he was discovered sleeping next to his wife, said police.
The Pinal County Sheriff's Office said officers responded to the shooting around 1 a.m. Saturday at a neighborhood around the Saddlebrooke adult community in Tucson. Saddlebrooke is located near the Santa Catalina Mountains in Southern Arizona.
PSCO spokesperson Tim Gaffney said the 68-year-old man found his wife, 63, and 22-year-old Stephen Trevor Chapman sleeping together in their small guest house.
The man, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, poked Chapman with his cane and told him to leave. The 22-year-old began yelling profanities and refused to leave the residence, the man told police.
The older man told police that Chapman charged at him and because he feared for his life he fired a "warning shot" towards him with a shotgun. The shot struck a nearby wall and Chapman received a minor injury to his hand.
"This was an unusual call for our deputies in an active senior community. Clearly, this young man should have heeded the warnings of the home owner to leave his residence and to stop sleeping with his wife," said PSCO Sheriff Paul Babeu said. "The young man is lucky that he only got poked with a cane and hit with a stray pellet from the shotgun."
Chapman was booked into the Pinal County Jail on one count of disorderly conduct. The case will be submitted to the Pinal County Attorney's Office for review. More charges are possible.
