Parent questions Florida school allowing students with C's, D's and F's on honor roll

PASCO COUNTY, Fla. - "I immediately assumed it's a mistake," said parent of a Pasco Middle School student, Beth Tillack.

"It doesn't make any sense," she said in describing her son's report card.

Tillack noticed the report card reading "good job" in a hand-written note from a teacher, a smiley face and word that her son had made the honor roll, all despite receiving a "C" and "D" letter grade. "The bottom line is there is nothing honorable about making a D," she said. "I was not happy, because how can I get my child to study for a test when he thinks he's done enough."

Pasco Middle School Principal Kim Anderson explained the handwritten note as encouragement and something teachers at her school have been doing since the 1990's. However, in the case of Tillack's son, the principal said the school revoked the first draft of his report card and replaced the "good job" with "Work on Civics. Ask for help," after Tillack complained.

"I think I'll caution teachers to look at the report cards carefully," Anderson said.

She said making honor roll is based on a points system.

Acquiring enough points for As can easily offset even an "F" to make the honor roll, by Pasco School District Policy, and one Anderson does not support.

"I do think it's important that we look at the situation," Anderson said.

"It makes my job at home so difficult," Tillack said.

"There definitely should be a cut off."

A Pasco School District Spokesperson confirmed to ABC Action News that school leaders are now discussing the review and possibly changing of policy on requirements for honor roll, a move that has the potential to impact some 35,000 Pasco middle and high school students.
