NEWPORT, Ky. -- The Queen City-based eatery nationally known for creations like the grilled cheese donut is making headlines once again.
If you caught Good Morning America Friday morning, you may have recognized the tasty treat featured for its originality.
Tom+Chee was also recently awarded a spot on “2014 Breakout Brands” by the top restaurant trade publication, Nation’s Restaurant News.
The local shop is listed among restaurants such as 4 Rivers Smokehouse based in Florida and Bareburger based in New York.
The eateries recognized are described as “10 hot, emerging restaurant concepts generating excitement in the industry.”
So what does the publication list as Tom+Chee’s breakout factors? A hot culinary niche and a funding/ownership change.
“Just as Wendy’s opened its first location in an old car dealership and Papa John’s Pizza started in the closet of a tavern, Tom+Chee had humble beginnings, debuting in a tent on Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati.”
The grilled cheese destination also announced this week they will begin a $225,000 renovation of their Newport store location. The upgrade will turn the shop into the flagship store and become the design model for Tom+Chee restaurants opening across the nation.
Tom+Chee has two other Tri-State locations, on Court Street and Walnut Street in downtown Cincinnati.
The restaurant has also recently expanded outside of its home region to Michigan, Georgia, New Jersey and other parts of Ohio and Kentucky.
