CINCINNATI -- A teen's plan to spread toys has evolved into a toy drive with a snowball effect, bringing toys to thousands of kids in the hospital during the holidays.
Savannah Day, from Roanoke, Va. thought she would spend her 14th Christmas in the hospital, and she's only 14 years old.
"I had a thing called hemiplegic migraines, where half my body goes numb, and I have a stroke," Day told WCPO reporter Lanny Brannock.
She was recovering from brain surgery Monday night after having the operation just days ago at Children's Hospital. Long before her surgery, her cheerleader sisters came up with a plan - a toy drive. But it grew into the toy drive to end all toy drives.
"At the end of practice, they came to me and said, 'we decided to raise toys for all the kids that are going to be in the hospital'," Day said.
Their original goal was to raise 500 toys, but the family's work went way beyond that. Together, they collected 4,000 toys and handed them out to patients at Children's.
The good deed was contagious. Two cheerleaders from Finneytown saw what Savannah and her friends and family did and wanted to help, too.
The toy drive became two. Since last week, the Finneytown cheerleaders have raised about 600 toys to add to Savannah's drive.
"It brings up a lot of emotions because I never thought I would inspire somebody," she said.
Savannah was released from the hospital earlier than expected. Her mom said this toy drive may not be the last.
