MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- A man is dead and a woman is in critical condition after a police chase late Monday night in Middletown.

Middletown police were assisting Clearcreek Township police at about 12:12 a.m. in pursuit of a vehicle they tried to stop for a traffic violation in Clearcreek Township when the vehicle hit stop sticks officers deployed on the roadway to slow it down, according to police.

The driver of the vehicle lost control after hitting the stop sticks, hit a curb and utility pole then began spinning.

The vehicle came to a stop in the middle of the intersection at South Sutphin and Stanley streets.

The driver, identified as 28-year-old McGovern S. Flener, of the Greater Cincinnati area, and the 20-year-old female passenger, Melissa Griffin of Lebanon were thrown from the vehicle on impact, according to Ohio State Patrol.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the woman was taken to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton by medical helicopter with serious head trauma and is listed in critical condition.

The vehicle was traveling approximately 84 mph in a 40 mph zone and speeds of 110 mph were recorded during the chase, troopers said.

The Ohio State Patrol said alcohol and speed appear to be factors in the crash.

Investigators have not released the identification of the passenger or any further details at this time.
