COVINGTON, Ky. – One man is behind bars and another is fighting for his life after a late night shooting on Russell Street.
Officers were dispatched about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday to the 1800 block of Russell Street to investigate reports of shots fired in the area. The callers indicated that both cars involved in the matter were still at the scene at the time the original 911 call was placed, according to a press release from the Covington Police Department.
Once at the scene, officers located 23-year-old Jeremy Stewart in a car suffering from two gunshot wounds. Stewart, who will turn 24 on Thursday, was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment.
His condition was not available Wednesday afternoon.
First responding officers also located Eric Powell, 24, who had a loaded Taurus .357 on him while at the scene, according to the release.
Covington Police Chief Spike Jones said Powell was detained at the scene and then brought to police headquarters along with several witnesses to the incident. Powell was formally arrested a few years later, Jones said.
Powell is being held at the Kenton County Detention Center. He is charged with first-degree assault but additional charges could follow.
