Police: Assault in Northside may be result of knockout game

CINCINNATI -- An assault that took place in Northside on Friday night may be part of the national 'knockout game.'

The game, sweeping parts the nation, involves teenagers knocking out unsuspecting victims with one blow to the head.

The attacks are violent and in some cases, deadly.

Police believe that the assault in Northside around 8:30 p.m. on Friday is related to this type of behavior.

WCPO's Amy Wadas spoke with Caleb Adler, professor of psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati who says the game has been played since 2011, but because of social media, is now becoming popular.

"People can get hurt badly," said Adler, "And in addition to the random nature of the victims, may mean they have an underlying medical condition that can make the blows potentially fatal."

Accidents have been reported in at least five states resulting in four deaths.
