CINCINNATI -- Heads began craning as crews began primary filming for Don Cheadle’s Miles Davis biopic, “Miles Ahead” downtown Monday.
Crews were spotted in the Lofts at Shillito Place parking garage located on 7th Street near Race Street shortly before noon.
Cincinnati was selected to represent the 1970s, the era of Miles Davis’ life and career Cheadle’s film will explore. Cheadle is slated to play the jazz legend. Ewan McGregor is also slated to star in the film.
The Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Film Commission said this will be at least the fifth time Cincinnati appeared on the big screen as a mid-20th century stand-in for New York.
“Carol,” set in 1950s New York, wrapped up primary filming in Greater Cincinnati earlier this year.
Producers of the film are looking for additional funding for the movie on INDIEGOGO , a crowd-sourcing website. So far the online campaign has netted more than $233,000, with a stated goal of raising $325,000 by July 10.
Money raised through the online campaign will be used to enhance production and gives INDIEGOGO donators a chance to connect with the film on a personal level.
Many of the rewards on the site for those who donate include Cincinnati themed items, such as a baseball thrown out by Cheadle during a Reds home baseball game and a private pre-screening with the cast at the Esquire Theater in Clifton sometime next year.
Whether or not the online campaign goal is met, the film will be made, staff with the production crew said.
“Miles Ahead” is scheduled to film in Cincinnati through mid-August.
