Dylan Tompkins: Man charged with killing toddler pleads not guilty

Slain child's family wants justice

HAMILTON, Ohio -- A Hamilton man indicted on murder charges after a 1-year-old boy sustained fatal injuries in his care pleaded not guilty in a Butler County courtroom Wednesday morning.

A judge raised Dylan Tompkins' bond from $150,000 to $500,000.

A trial date was set for Dec. 2.

The mother of the Bryce Pelfrey and other family members sat in the courtroom. Bryce's grandfather said it has been a rough time for his daughter.

"My daughter is beside herself obviously and can't talk to anybody about it," Duane Pelfrey said.  "We're satisfied right now with where we're moving forward to.  And that's all we want is another day, a step forward toward justice. What we want is justice for Bryce."

A bikers group is planning a fundraising ride Saturday to help pay for Bryce’s headstone.

Tompkins was arrested on Aug. 2 after Hamilton police responded to 15 Marlou Drive and found Bryce  unresponsive.

Bryce was taken to Fort Hamilton Hospital, then moved to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries a day later.

Tompkins is charged with one count of child endangering and one count of murder.
