CINCINNATI -- As new Xavier University students arrived this week for the beginning of the school year, they did more than set up their dorms: They learned how to save lives.

For the first time ever, the private university trained all incoming freshmen how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, commonly known as CPR.

With help from an emergency physician, a student-run organization called “Xavier has a Heart” has been training faculty and fellow students in CPR since last year. But on Thursday and Friday, all freshman were trained in the life-saving technique.

Students were also trained to use an automatic external defibrillator, or AED.

The CPR technique taught to students this year is called compression-only CPR, which doesn’t require mouth-to-mouth.

In the last few years, the American Heart Association has promoted this method because many bystanders are reluctant to perform mouth-to-mouth breathing on a stranger.
