BATAVIA, Ohio -- Two men are dead after a five-vehicle crash on U.S. 50 in Stonelick Township Friday morning.
Authorities said 43-year-old Michael Brown and 39-year-old Shawn Wilson were killed in the crash that happened at about 6:40 a.m. in the 1700 block of U.S. 50.
Troopers said the roadway was temporarily closed between Ohio 222 and Route 132 while crews investigated.
Ohio State Highway Patrol officials said 60-year-old Michael Simpson, of Cleves, was driving eastbound up a hill in his semi-truck when his trailer detached. The box trailer then went into the westbound lane where Brown, of Williamsburg, Ohio, sideswiped it with his 2004 black Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.
Investigators said Brown then struck a guardrail on the right side of the road and later smashed into a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by 43-year-old Todd Frost Sr. in the eastbound lanes.
Another vehicle traveling westbound, a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup, then hit the front of the detached trailer. That vehicle was driven by Wilson, of Lynchburg, Ohio.
A fifth vehicle, driven by 52-year-old Kelli Moulden, then hit the rear of the pickup truck that was lodged into the front of the trailer.
The Clermont County Coroner pronounced Brown and Wilson dead at the scene. Moulden was taken to Bethesda North Hospital and was later released. Simpson and Frost were not injured.
Officials said Brown and Wilson were not wearing seat belts.
Investigators said Simpson's semi-truck, of Nash Finch Company, was traveling from Blue Ash to the Owensville IGA grocery store when the trailer became detached. Officials said Simpson drove about 15 miles before his trailer detached.
The roadway was closed for about eight hours while crash reconstructionists mapped the scene.
Police did not say if Simpson, who has been in the driving business for more than four decades, will face any charges.
Officials said they are still trying to determine why the trailer became detached.
