Bright Ideas: Projects aim to bring sculpture to fashion runways & a mystery movie to life

CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati area is rich in creativity and bright ideas. Many artists, community activists and entrepreneurs are ready to run with projects and programs, and they’re turning to crowdfunding sites to fuel their ideas.

Each Tuesday, we highlight two projects that are underway and asking for your support.

Project> The Sculpture Runway Production

Started: January 23, 2014
Goal: $3,000
Project By: Ashley Butler & Deztany Johnson

The Sculpture Runway Production is a project by two Miami University students, Ashley Butler and Deztany Johnson, who have partnered with students from the Butler Tech cosmetology program to bring an artistic twist to the fashion runway.

The production will be an avant garde "sculptural runway show" expressing the many distinctive characteristics that make up sisters.

According to Ashley Butler, the idea comes from her adolescent question of, “Who am I?” and the realization that she, like many women, have two very different sides to their personalities.

This dual personality will be represented by two platforms that will run down the middle of a fountain. Each side of the platform will represent a sister.

The “Ashlyse” character is consumed in pop culture, being bold, futuristic, valiant, a man-eater, erotic, and her own unwavering person.

The “Esylia” character will be a young woman who is drawn to vintage influences, comic book superheroes, international cultures, new experiences, life lessons, philosophy, relationships, friends, love, family, happiness, and beauty. Models from each side of the runway will be covered in head-to-toe art that represents their unique personality.

  • Where will the money go? Funding will cover the materials for the stage and runways, materials for the sculpture/costumes, special effects hair and makeup tools and products, outdoor film and lighting equipment, state permits, portfolios and photo prints for those involved, and any additional production costs.

Butler said she is hoping the success of the production will help to introduce a new kind of sculpture to the art department.

Why should people support The Sculpture Runway Production?

Ashley Butler says: “Someone should choose this project because there is so much artistic talent and passion being brought together into this project by so many hard working students. This is that project that will make a whole lot of heads look this way and pay attention to what students can produce next.  All we need is the money to be able to show everyone what we can do.”

Project> "Wells and Mary: Investigating Love"

Started: January 10, 2014
Goal: $5,000
Project By: Joshua Smith

"Wells and Mary: Investigating Love" is an independent film about Wells, a private investigator, and Mary, a career focused, recent college grad. A simple act of blackmail leads the pair to team up for the investigation of the mysterious Choice Killer. The investigation soon leads to a true admiration for Mary by Wells, and eventually tests his love as he is forced to rescue her from the killer they have been investigating.

Smith said the idea for the film came from the subject of love and society’s concept that when love is the motivation behind our actions, we tend to see all consequences as positive.

He said this film challenges that concept and ask the question, “What if the consequences were negative?”

  • Where will the money go? Funding will cover pre- and post-production costs. Any additional funds will cover festivals and marketing to promote the film.

Smith said the film will have an impact on the community. He believes it will serve as a way of bonding the community with the arts, and will help to encourage other fellow artists to pursue their projects.

Why should people support "Wells and Mary: Investigating Love?"

Joshua Smith says: “We have done numerous short films, written many screenplays, developed our craft, and showed patience and consistency of improvement through it all. This is our next step, and it won't be our last. But we can't do it without backers.”
