HANOVER TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Alcohol and speed played a part in the death of a University of Cincinnati football player and his friend who was driving.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office released more details Friday in the deaths of Hamilton natives Benjamin Flick and Sean VanDyne.

The students were involved a crash on Sept. 21 on Stahlheber Road in Hanover Township that claimed their lives and injured two others.

Sheriff Richard Jones said initial blood tests show Van Dyne had a blood alcohol level of .056 -- the legal limit for a person under the age of 21 is .02.

The sheriff said the Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team is confident the final test results will substantiate that number.

Jones said investigators also found that VanDyne was driving at about 85 mph within five seconds before the crash.

Deputies said both Van Dyne and Flick were not wearing seat belts. The passengers in the rear seats, Mark Barr and Javon Harrison, were wearing seat belts.

The sheriff said investigators are still waiting for the final toxicology report.

No other details have been released.
