Pediatrics journal report claims healthy kids can die from flu if not vaccinated

A new report from the journal Pediatrics claims healthy children can die from the flu if they do not get vaccinated.

The report states that 830 children died from flu complications such as pneumonia during the last eight years.

According to the report, many of those children did not fall into high-risk categories but 43 percent were not vaccinated. The median age of the children was 7.

During the 2012-2013 flu season, the CDC said there were more than 150 pediatric flu-related deaths.

The report also said that about 20,000 children are hospitalized each year because of the flu.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend children receive the flu vaccine starting at age 6 months.

The current vaccine protects against three main strains of the virus. There is also a vaccine that protects against four strains.

The CDC said people should expect flu activity to increase in the coming weeks.

Flu symptoms include:

  • a fever of 100 or higher
  • cough and/or sore throat
  • runny nose
  • aches
  • chills
  • fatigue
  • nausea
