It's not your normal potluck, and you're invited

CINCINNATI -- How many times have you taken part in a potluck, and then left feeling stuffed, bloated and in regret of eating macaroni and cheese, pulled pork and chocolate cake?

There's a healthier potluck set for Sunday in Cincinnati - and you're invited.

VeganEarthUS, a Cincinnati-based nonprofit that's operated solely by volunteers, will hold the Food vs. Supplements vs. Dead-End Diversions potluck Sunday at 2 p.m.

The gathering will be held Clifton United Methodist Church, located at 3416 Clifton Avenue.

The public is encouraged to attend the potluck, and to hang out with 88-year-old Rachel Lewis. She's a health coach, and the co-founder of the Clergy Health Council of Greater Cincinnati (CHCGC). Lewis is passionate about living a plant-based eating lifestyle, and consuming raw, macrobiotic foods.

For more than three decades, Lewis has been vegetarian, and in recent years, she's become Vegan, according to the CHCGC. She strives to educate and inspire others when it comes to a Vegan diet, and believes supporting local, organic farmers is a sure bet for sustainability.

The VeganEarth organization believes that eating plant-based, natural foods helps maintain exceptional health, sustainability and compassion for animals, people and the Earth, spokeswoman Mary Ann Lederer said.

"We're pretty much all 'foodies,' who love the amazing and delicious array of tasty dishes people bring to share," VeganEarth said.

It's easy - here's what you need to know:

  • Bring a dish that feeds at least ten people.
  • Make sure the dish is made with fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, seeds, nuts.
  • Leave out ingredients derived from animals, including meats, dairy, eggs, casein, honey.
  • Since ingredients are central to Vegan eating, and because others might wish to share recipes, bring a list of the components your dish contains.
  • The less waste, the better - please bring your own compostable or reusable plates and utensils

 

Not all VeganEarth members are Vegan, or even vegetarian. VeganEarth says some of their group eats dairy and others eat meat. The potluck gives people a chance to enjoy diverse food and company, while learning news ways to eat healthier.
