Hoxworth Blood Center in need of Type O donors after shortage

CINCINNATI -- Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati is asking members of the public with Type O blood to donate immediately.

The center said it has an urgent need for Type O donors – both negative and positive – and must recruit an additional 800 donors this week in order to recover from a current shortage.

The center said everybody, regardless of blood type, is urged to donate.

“National blood supplies are limited and we cannot rely on acquiring blood from other communities at this time,” Hoxworth officials said in a release.

According to Dr. Ronald Sacher, the current blood shortage is a result of a decrease in donations and an increased need from patients at the 31 hospitals Hoxworth serves.

Hoxworth operates eight Neighborhood Donor Centers in Anderson, Blue Ash, Downtown, Ft. Mitchell, Mason, Tri-County, Western Hills and the Hoxworth Center adjacent to University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Sacher said walk-in donations are welcome, but appointments are encouraged.
