Why was a man dancing while filling up his car at a Speedway station in Northern Kentucky?
Simple: the low price he was getting. You might break out in dance too if you suddenly saw the gas prices we spotted in Florence on Monday.
Drivers heading along Burlington Pike and US 42 in Florence were doing double takes when they spotted the lowest prices in years.
Regular was selling for $2.91 at some stations, and a mind blowing $2.88 at some others. The average price in the Cincinnati area is currently $3.29.
"It's fantastic, it really is," one woman told us.
Temporary Price War
Why the price war? You can thank the grand opening of the new Murphy Express on US 42 at Mall Road.
It lowered its price over the weekend as part of its grand opening special.
Nearby Speedway stations, Kroger, and even the IGA Express were forced to lower their prices just to be competitive.
But IGA manager Peggy Wesselman told us it's fine by her as long as it brings in customers, who then buy snacks and her locally-famous fried chicken.
"It's great for the consumers, absolutely great," Wesselman said. "Maybe not for the retailers, but it's all good!"
With these prices almost 40 cents below average, it would have been dereliction of duty had we not taken time to fill up our WCPO news van. After all, it's my job to save the station some money.
It may not last more than another day or two, but for Northern Kentuckians like Shannon Prowant, the timing can't be better.
"It's nice to have a break this time of year," she said. "Yes it is, going into Christmas shopping, fuel oil, all that good stuff."
She wasn't dancing, but she was thrilled nonetheless.
As always, don't waste your money.
