First it was 4 a.m, Friday morning, then midnight, then 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving.
Now Black Friday is starting early on Thanksgiving evening at more and more stores.
And Macy's is about to be next.
Macy's now confirms that its stores will open at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving Day.
That breaks a 155 year old Macy's tradition of closing on Thanksgiving Day. (In recent years it opened at Midnight.)
This comes as more and more shoppers do their door-buster shopping on Thanksgiving night, instead of waiting in the cold for early morning sales.
Many stores move up their times
Last year, in 2012:
-Macy's, Kohl's, and many other stores opened at Midnight for Black Friday. But midnight now feels "late," which is what is apparently pushing Macy's starting time up.
-Toys R Us stores and Walmart opened at 8 p.m.
-Target opened at 9 p.m., but was the subject of an online petition to push those hours back (it did not follow the wishes of the petition drive).
-Sears and Kmart were open all day Thanksgiving, but the sales did not start until 10 p.m.
This year, some of those stores are expected to bump up their opening times even earlier.
So if you were hoping to eat turkey, catch some football, and get some winks -- those days are over. Have a cup of coffee instead.
