Best and worst Labor Day sales

Don't Waste Your Money

This weekend brings some of the best sales since Memorial Day.

But you'll want to know what's on sale before you head out to the mall, because while you can find some deep discounts on some items, on others, not so much.

What to Buy This Weekend

We checked with two money-saving websites, and Both say if you're shopping for your home, this weekend is a great time to do it.
It says this is also the best time to find final clearance sales on swim suits, golf clothing, and other summer apparel. says this "final hurrah" of summer weekend, is also the best time of year to grab a bargain on grills and patio furniture, with discounts as much as 75 percent off.

By Christmas season, next year's grills are in, and won't be marked down.

Meantime, you have probably seen lots of car dealers advertising big Labor Day clearance sales.  They are real, according to a report by Scripps news.   This is a great weekend to buy a new car, as dealers clear out their 2014 inventory.

What to Wait On

But contrary to popular belief, you will not find big markdowns on fall clothing. suggests you wait until October for the best fall clothing deals.

One exception:  Macy's has a Super Saturday Sale, with an extra 20% off on marked merchandise, but that tends not to be the hottest new fashions.

DealNews, meantime, says you should hold off on big screen TVs if you can: the lowest prices of the year are coming in November, on and right after Black Friday.

Best Deals Right Now

Both savings sites say the best deals this weekend will be on appliances, beds, and furniture, with select beds marked down 50 percent or more at some stores.

  • Best Buy, Sears, Kmart, hh gregg, Lowes, and other big box stores have appliances as much as 30 percent off.
  • Mattress Firm, Ashley Furniture, Furniture Fair, and other regional furniture retailers all have major Labor Day bedding and furniture sales.
  • If you are near a Sleepy's, they are advertising half price off every mattress.
  • Home Depot and Lowe's both have a paint sale this weekend for fall DIY-ers.

As always, don't waste your money.
