Despite the explosion in craft beer in recent years, beer sales are actually on the decline.
Beer sales in the United States dropped 2.3 percent between 2007 and 2012 according to Beer Marketer's Insights, an industry group, as consumers moved to wine and mixed spirits.
But some once popular brands declined even more. The marketing group has just released a list of nine beers that have seen sales slide 25 percent or more the past five years.
These beers are still selling, and many beer drinkers like them. It's just that they are no longer the market leaders they once were.
Beers With Big Sales Declines
The group's 9 beers people are no longer drinking as much, with their drop in sales since 2007:
1. Michelob Light, down 69 percent
2. Bud Select, down 65 percent
3. Milwaukee's Best Premium, down 58 percent
4. Miller Genuine Draft, down 56 percent
5. Old Milwaukee, down 54 percent
6. Milwaukee's Best Light, down 39 percent
7. Heineken Premium Light, down 36 percent
8. Budweiser, down 28 percent
9. Labatt Blue, down 28 percent
Note that many of these are light beers. The trend toward craft beers and IPA suggests that consumers are moving to full-bodied beers these days, and drinking less light beer, which was most popular in the '80s and '90s.
Perhaps their waistlines failed to slim down, despite moving to light beer, so they moved back to full bodied beers.
