The Church of the Advent was organized on July 12, 1855 and consecrated as a parish by the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio in 1873. The emergence of the renewal movement in the 1960s had a profound effect upon the parish. During this time, the parish was active in the Episcopal charismatic movement.
Another notable development in the history of the Church of the Advent was the founding of the Open Door Ministry in 1973. This ministry was established to assist the mentally disabled in the community. It has grown to serve the wider community.
