CINCINNATI - Justin Bieber's career has recently seen a series of downward spirals. Public urination? A birthday tantrum? These may have simply been previews of the Canadian pop singer's fall from from grace. With Bieber's arrest Thursday on DUI and drag-racing charges, fans are crushed and haters are gleeful.

We trace the pop superstar's whirlwind career in this video timeline and ask...

Where did things start to go wrong?

March 1, 1994 – Justin Bieber is born in London, Ont. to Pattie Mallette and Jeremy Bieber.

2007-2008 – Pattie begins to upload videos of her son covering popular songs to YouTube. Meanwhile, former marketing exec and talent manager Scooter Braun stumbles across one of the videos while searching for new talent. He is impressed and flies Bieber, then 13, to Atlanta to record a demo.

Within a week, Bieber sings for R&B singer Usher, who would later become his mentor and musical collaborator.

October 2008 – Island Records signs Bieber, and Scooter Braun becomes his manager.

July 2009 – Bieber releases his first single, “One Time” before his debut album even drops. It reaches number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is certified Platinum in the U.S. and Canada.

November 2009My World, Bieber’s debut album, drops and is soon certified Platinum in the U.S. and Double Platinum in Canada and the U.K.

January 2010 – Bieber releases My World 2.0 with its first single, “Baby” featuring Ludacris. It reaches number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and is an international success.

June 2010 – Bieber embarks on his first headlining tour, the "My World Tour."

July 2010 – “Baby” surpasses Lady Gaga and Beyoncé’s “Bad Romance” video as the most-watched YouTube video of all time. It remains the most watched video until November 2012.

December 2010 – Justin Bieber confirms his relationship with Disney star and singer Selena Gomez.

February 2011 – “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,” a 3-D biopic and concert documentary tops the box office and reportedly exceeds industry expectations. It features the song he recorded for “The Karate Kid,” the 2011 remake starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith.

July 2011 – Justin Bieber is ranked #2 on Forbes list of Best-Paid Celebrities Under 30.

November 2011Under the Mistletoe, Bieber's first holiday album featuring both covers and original songs, is released.

March 2012 – Bieber premieres the first single off his new Believe album called “Boyfriend.”  It debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.

July 2012 – Island Records releases Bieber’s third studio album, Believe, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. This new album featured a mature R&B and dance sound, compared to Bieber's prior pop albums.

November 2012 – Bieber and Gomez reportedly end their two-year relationship, then reconcile later that month.

January 2013 – Bieber and Gomez end their relationship again.

March 2013 – The pop star's 19th birthday is reportedly "his worst," marked by a tantrum and a run-in with the paparazzi outside a London club.

May 2013 – German officials detain Bieber's pet monkey during his tour after he fails to produce the required vaccination and import papers. Malley the monkey becomes a ward of the German state when Bieber fails to send her documentation. She is later sent to a zoo.

July 2013 – Justin Bieber receives heat after a video of him urinating in a restaurant’s mop bucket hits YouTube. He also makes profane comments about former President Bill Clinton during the incident.

December 2013 – Bieber tells fans he is officially retiring on his Twitter account.

January 23, 2014 – Miami Beach Police stop Justin Bieber for drag racing. He fails a field sobriety test and is arrested; he also reportedly smoked marijuana before he was arrested.

My freshman year roommate Evanne first showed me Bieber’s early YouTube videos, and I’ve followed his tumultuous career ever since. Anyone else? Sound off on this latest development by connecting with me on Twitter, @jennyfromthebak
