Report: Britney Spears songs used to scare off Somali pirates

What can scare away Somali pirates best? No, not weapons or threats.

Britney Spears.

That's right. Spears' music works better than other tactics, according to Metro.

Metro says Merchant Navy Officer Rachel Owens revealed Spears' music is blared loudly to deter pirate kidnap attacks off the east coast of Africa.

Which songs proved most effective? Opps! I Did it Again and Baby One More Time.

"Her songs were chosen by the security team because they thought the pirates would hate them most. These guys can’t stand Western culture or music, making Britney’s hits perfect," said Owens, who works on supertankers off the east coast of Africa.

There were 176 pirate attacks in 2011 close to the African coast, according to the site.

"It’s so effective the ship’s security rarely needs to resort to firing guns," said Owens. "As soon as the pirates get a blast of Britney, they move on as quickly as they can."

"Pirates will go to any lengths to avoid or try to overcome the music," said Steven Jones, of the Security Association for the Maritime Industry. "I’d imagine using Justin Bieber would be against the Geneva Convention."
