VIDEO: Violin-maker Damon Gray pulling strings in Over-the-Rhine

Clients include Cincy Symphony musicians

CINCINNATI -- Some were born to play the violin. Damon Gray says he was born to make violins, along with violas and cellos.

The College Conservatory of Music graduate grew up in Charleston, S.C. with parents who were musicians, but he built his first violin as a teenager and "was hooked."

He now builds and repairs the stringed instruments from a tiny shop just overlooking his home on the eastern fringe of Over-the-Rhine.

While his clients include musicians from the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, a limited local marketplace keeps Gray serving string players from all over the eastern Midwest.

Without any other projects on his plate, it would take Gray more than two months to build a violin from the piles of raw maple he keeps in his basement. His instruments sell for about $3,000 and up.

In this video, we step into Gray's workshop to hear about his craft and take a glimpse of the work behind the strings.
