Stacey Rishoi brings more than a voice to the title role of Cincinnati Opera's 'Carmen'

Season opens Thursday, June 12

CINCINNATI—Stacey Rishoi had planned to teach—she had studied the violin and was pursuing a doctorate of musical arts—when, in 1999, she won the prestigious Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

That detoured her into a singing career, with operatic roles carrying her throughout the country and beyond.

A native of Watertown, S.D., Rishoi first came to the Tri-State through the College Conservatory of Music, where she met her eventual husband, the opera singer Gustav Andreassen. The couple settled in Bellevue, Ky.

Despite the proximity to the Cincinnati Opera, Rishoi is only now seeing her first principal role with the company. She stars in the title role of “Carmen,” opening Cincinnati Opera’s season with four performances, beginning Thursday, June 12.

In this video, we drop into rehearsals of “Carmen” and talk with the mezzo-soprano about the gifts that have come to her as a performer, and specifically in this role, after reaching age 40.
