High school theater celebrated across tri-state in Cappies awards gala

CINCINNATI - Clad in finest clothing adorned with golden medals to proudly display their nominations, hundreds of high school theatre performers, technicians, and writers gathered at the Aronoff Center on Friday night to attend the 13th Cincinnati Cappies Gala.  While the performers and technicians entered with dreams of winning one of 40 award categories, the 125+ student critics who selected the award recipients were equally eager to learn the outcome of their votes.  To earn the privilege to vote in the awards, these critics graduated from a highly defined authorship program established by National Cappies rules that govern the 15 chapters spread across the United States and Canada.

As part of the program, each critic was required to attend many student performances from the 20+ local schools that participate in Cappies, and to then write reviews that follow a stringent set of criteria.  After the reviews are judged through an impartial ranking system, the top 10 reviews for each performance were published by WCPO.  Due to its emphasis on student writing, the most treasured awards presented at the Cappies Gala – often accompanied by various scholarships – are reserved for these top student writers.

From approximately 300 nominees across 20 local area high schools, the 2014 Cappies Award recipients are:
