CCM student composer Ty Niemeyer creates a fanfare for Youth Orchestra anniversary

CINCINNATI -- It was only six years ago when Ty Niemeyer, then a senior at Moeller High School, performed in the percussion section of the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra .

Now a fifth-year student at College Conservatory of Music, Niemeyer has composed a fanfare for brass and percussion to honor the orchestra's 50th anniversary. The orchestra commissioned Niemeyer's piece, which he has titled iubilo—a jubilee.

This WCPO video features an interview with Niemeyer and portions of his fanfare in rehearsal.

"It's not often an organization like this asks you to write a piece, so it's definitely a very nice opportunity to have, especially for an organization I was involved with in high school," said Niemeyer, majoring in both percussion and composition. "I feel very close to this orchestra. I loved coming here on Sunday afternoons to make music, at a pretty high level, with other like-minded high schoolers."

Niemeyer's fanfare is part of a program also featuring two Sibelius works and another from Wagner. The concert is 7 p.m. Saturday at Corbett Auditorium, inside the Conservatory of Music.

Tickets for the Winter Concert, available at the door, are $10 for adults and $8 for students. For more information, call (513) 381-3300 or visit the orchestra's web site .
