CINCINNATI -- It might a few months until Lent begins but it’s time now to get all that bock beer ready.
A group of Cincinnati Franciscan friars went to the Christian Moerlein brewery Friday to do just that.
The friars blessed Moerlein’s Emancipator Doppelbock in a ceremony at 11 a.m. The monks blessed the beer while Master Brewer Richard Dubé added in the hops.
The doppelbock won a silver medal during this year’s Great American Beer Festival in Denver.
The medieval hermits of St. Francis first brewed doppelbocks in Munich. The beer is a higher alcohol version of bock beer that is served as “liquid bread” during fasting.
Christian Moerlein’s President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Hardman and Brother Tim Sucher, the Guardian of St. Francis Seraph Friary, were on hand for the blessing.
This batch should hit the store shelves by mid-January.
This year Lent, the traditional time of fasting, begins Wednesday, March 5, and ends Thursday, April 17.
