FORT MITCHELL, Ky. - Many Northern Kentucky residents hit by flash flooding are spending the holiday week cleaning up their basements.

According to the National Weather Service, the Fort Mitchell area of Northern Kentucky saw more precipitation the week of July 1 than anywhere else inside the 1-275 loop.

There is more rain in the forecast and 9 On Your Side reporter Kendall Herold shares some important tips to keep your home safe.

The first tip is to make sure your home's drain for rainfall is clear and free of debris.

Another tip is to make sure to clean your gutters and downspouts. If they are clogged, water will run down the walls and stay next to the house.

You can also figure out where your water's collecting if you walk around during the storm. If it's next to your house, it's a problem.

Standard homeowner's insurance policies don't cover water flooding in basements. If your home has a history of flooding during heavy rainfall, you may want to consider adding flood insurance to your existing policy.

And when it comes to the plants many of you spend so much money on at the start of summer- there is such a thing as too much rain.

If you have potted plants, empty them of any sitting water. If they're still oversaturated, move them to a covered area.
