FLORENCE, Ky. -- Alcohol may be a factor in a crash that left a Gallatin County man dead Sunday morning, police said.

James Lutz, of Glencoe, and Cynthia Gooch, of Erlanger, were standing on the side of southbound I-75/71 near U.S. Route 42. Florence police Capt. Tom Grau said they may have been working on their pickup truck.

At about 5:45 a.m., Schawanna Jones, of Covington, went off the road and hit them with her minivan, Grau said.

Lutz was pronounced dead at the scene. Gooch and Jones suffered serious injuries, and they were taken to University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Grau said Florence police haven't yet filed charges, and the crash is still being investigated.

The southbound lanes of I-75/71 were closed between U.S. Route 42 and Mount Zion Road for more than two hours.
