NKU names Geoffrey Mearns as new president

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University has selected its next president.

The Board of Regents elected Geoffrey Mearns as NKU's fifth president Tuesday morning.

Prior to becoming the President of NKU, Mearns served as Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs at Cleveland State University. Before entering into education, Mearns was a successful federal prosecutor.

Mearns was on campus for Tuesday's announcement. 9 News is scheduled to sit down with the new president Tuesday morning.

9 News spoke with Mearns last week during his campus visit. He said he hopes to build on the strong foundation already in place at NKU, and plans to help the modern day student succeed.

"Our students these days are not quite the same that are students might have been 30 years ago when I was in college," Mearns said. "Many of the students work, many of the students have other obligations. So the academic experience needs to be more flexible, and more supportive to respond to their different needs and these changing times."

Mearns was one of three finalists for the job.
