Tropical Storm Bertha formed late last night, just a few hours before we changed the calendar over to August.
August 1 is significant because it's the average day we typically see the second named tropical system. The first hurricane usually forms by August 10, but Hurricane Arthur blew that statistic out of the water when it quickly strengthened into a hurricane in early July.
So far, this season has gotten up and running (just slightly) quicker than the average hurricane season.
Although these first two storms formed relatively soon, they are in no way any indicator of how the rest of the season will shape up, but it's still fun to see when these storms typically develop.
