Squires set to defend NKAC title

Four-day tournament starts Tuesday

A year after become the youngest-ever Northern Kentucky Amateur Championship winner, Austin Squires begin his defense of that title on Tuesday.

Now 17, Squires will tee off at 12:40 p.m. in the 2014 NKAC at Triple Crown Country Club in Richwood.

The Northern Kentucky Golf Association had 66 participants listed on its Web site as of Monday, including three-time champion Lance Lucas.

Lucas, who won this event in 1999, 2003 and 2004, has also finished second four times. He will tee off at 8:40 a.m.

The runners-up from 2012 and 2013 – Tim Murphy and Cale Barr – are also among this year’s field.

The golfers will play 18 holes on Tuesday, and Squires and the top 31 other scorers will advance to the Championship Flight.

Match play on Wednesday and Thursday will trim that field of 32 to eight, and those remaining will play 36 holes on Friday to decide the championship.
